I joined the fire department as a volunteer in 2015 and was hired full-time in 2016. My wife, Ceandra, and I have three children: Molly, Owen, and Hazel.
In July 2024, shortly after her first birthday, Hazel was diagnosed with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by a cyst blocking the normal flow of fluid in her brain. She underwent two surgeries in an effort to reduce the cyst and relieve the blockage, as the cyst cannot be completely removed. Following her second surgery, Hazel experienced complications resulting in new-onset seizures.
Hazel is now closely monitored by her interdisciplinary care team at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and undergoes follow-up MRIs every six months to monitor her condition. As a result of her diagnosis, she has experienced significant gross motor delays and is currently learning to walk, along with other developmental challenges.
To support her progress, Hazel receives physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services 4–5 times each week. Our ultimate hope is to see her continue progressing and be able to run around and play like any other child her age.
